GEM's eDOT team is helping to organize the International Conference on Computing and Mission (ICCM), which is being held in the Netherlands in February. ICCM is a great opportunity for people in the ministry fields of computers and technology to network, discuss new technologies, share resources, offer encouragement, and fellowship together.

Our print team was asked to help them develop a brochure that could be used over several years, and point people to the ICCM website for registration, logistics, and other helpful information.

Two of our GemStone Media team members are planning to attend and lead workshops at this year's conference.

Intern Jen has been hard at work on her big project while she's here: illustrating and designing a visual aid for the Creation to Christ (or C2C) gospel story used by missionaries and church planters around the world. C2C is a 15-minute gospel presentation told in a simple way, specifically geared for people who are unchurched. We are thrilled with Jen's creative work and are looking forward to seeing the printed piece. Until then, Jen has placed the illustrations on the web for people to use electronically (for cell phones, ipods, tablets, etc.).

"First Steps in the Faith" Discipleship Book

We're excited about how God might use Primeiros Passos na Fé (First Steps in the Faith), a discipleship booklet we were asked to design for a church planter in Portugal. The booklet will be used as a follow-up tool for the My Hope gospel program beginning there in early December. My Hope is a televised version of the Billy Graham Crusade. Christians throughout the country have been trained and encouraged to invite family, friends and neighbors into their homes to view the program on three different nights. When the program is finished, they will share brief testimonies and give people a chance to receive Christ in their living rooms. Those who accept Christ’s gift of salvation will be followed up with Bible studies using discipleship booklets like Primeiros Passos na Fé.

Pray for this event, that many Portuguese would be led to faith in Christ and grounded in His Word!

Video trip to Bulgaria

Two of our videographers, Ted and Walt, recently returned from a video shoot in Bulgaria. In August, we learned about Harry, a Bulgarian artist, who God is using as an evangelist because of his willing obedience. After several email and skype conversations, Ted and Walt flew to Bulgaria earlier this month to spend eight days interviewing Harry and his wife, and others who know him, as well as to follow Harry around to watch firsthand how God is using him in his region.

Our video team is currently working on producing a documentary-style short video that we hope will encourage and challenge Christians around the world. So stay tuned!

The Art Factory building was the location for many of our sets, and Rick and Mary Beth provided countless props, including large pieces of furniture and rugs. They let us completely reorganize their space, and shuffled their own scheduling to accommodate us. Their passion for coming alongside artists and giving of their resources without expectation of gain enabled us to do our best work.

The details: We were asked to make a video highlighting the needs in Europe for GEM's website. The reality is that there are millions of Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, and spiritualists living all across Europe, many of whom are immigrants from unreached countries. We created this video to challenge Christians who are thinking about ministry to unreached areas, but may not have considered the enormous potential for sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ to immigrants right here in Europe.

We're excited about how God has put Reach the World together. All the hard work of planning and preparation has really paid off and we're pleased with the result. We hope that this video will be the first of many non-verbal short videos exploring topics that will challenge people where they are. Feel free to pass the Reach the World link on to people in your network who would benefit or be encouraged by it. Let's get the word out about Europe's potential!

GemStone Media produced three different videos this year challenging believers to consider ministry in Europe. The On Any Given Day video was produced to show the great need that exists to share the Gospel here. What Would It Look Like? was produced to connect people with their personal potential to have an impact. Currently we're in post production on the final of those three pieces, Reach the World, which speaks specifically to the broad cultural diversity that exists in Europe and the potential to have an impact for Christ all over the world by having an impact in Europe. Bryce, our intern this summer, did a fantastic job putting together a behind-the-scenes look at this final video as it was being produced. We hope you'll take a look. Summer Video Production

The video team has been busily working on a new video that will focus on the large variety of immigrants living in Europe. Production has included creating several interior sets, multiple mornings shooting in the center of Basel, gathering a large number of props and costumes, and finding a handful of actors to play the various roles. It has been a huge project so far, but we're expecting a good return on our time investment! Stay tuned...

Church Planting Training in Basel

For ten days, nearly 60 missionaries from the U.S. and across Europe attended an engaging church planting training called T4T (Training for Trainers) in Basel, Switzerland. This training presented many exciting and effective examples of how God is building His Church around the world through biblical church planting efforts.

GemStone Media was privileged to run the audio/video for the event through the leadership of video producers, Krister and Walt. They also recorded the entire training event (about 50 hours!) doing a live mix between three cameras and PowerPoint presentations.

This training footage will eventually be edited down and made available online in shorter segments so that missionaries around the world can learn these effective church planting methods.

Leslie has a passion for art and Europe, and has just finished her junior year of college pursuing a BA degree in Media Arts. As she has been thinking about her future, she was thrilled to discover "a mission driven organization impassioned for Europe, but also one that utilizes media to serve."

April was a busy month for some of our video people. Jim and Ted spent five days in Edinburgh, Scotland, attending the Visual Story Network summit. Jim was on the planning committee for the summit, and presented "Missional Engagement – Making Story Relevant Today" with Nick Pollard of Damaris. Ted organized the sound and video at the conference, making sure all the videos played when they were supposed to, and that everything and everyone could be heard.

Immediately after that trip, Jim left for Budapest, Hungary, to shoot a GEM church planting training given by Michael Frost (from The Upstream Collective*). This footage will be uploaded and made available to churches, mission organizations, and missionaries around the world.

ZBCS updates their look

We had a chance to work with the folks at Zaporozhye Bible College and Seminary (Ukraine) again. They decided to ask us to create a new logo for their school and update their brochure and website, as well as provide files for some travel displays and banners. It was a challenge to do all of the brainstorming and editing via skype calls – and they were very specific in what they wanted – but they expressed several times that the end result was just what they were looking for!

The video team will be working on a video for them as well, so stay tuned!

UPDATE: A trip to India

In July 2010, we wrote about a project involving Love and Hope Children's Home in East India.

Praise God! All 35 children have now been sponsored through supporters in Europe and North America. But here are two other ways to bless this ministry. First, many of the 35 children have been separated from their siblings, and there are specific ways you can help reunite them. Second, Love and Hope has recently raised half of the funds (roughly $15,000) they need to build a permanent home for these kids. To find out more about how to reunite siblings or give funds toward the building costs, check out the blog we created for them. Thank you for your prayers and interest!

Meet Tom!

GemStone Media has a high value for professionalism and we make it a priority each year to enhance our media skills with further training. One of the areas we decided to work on this year was increasing our ability to write compelling, short stories for video. We asked a friend of our team, Tom Khazoyan, to lead a week-long workshop on story-writing for video. Tom is from Denver, Colorado, and has had 25 years of film and video experience. He recently produced and edited a full-length feature film called "The Enemy God," which has earned several notable film awards.

The intensive story-writing training with Tom has really paid off, sparking the beginnings of a new video project which we hope can be used in a future Alpha Course setting introducing the topic of forgiveness and reconciliation. We hope to begin shooting this summer!

"On Any Given Day" is a short video that was created to help believers in Christ think about the reality of the world around them, and specifically the challenge to reach the lost in Europe. So often we get caught up with life and we forget to be concerned about what really matters: people are living and dying each day without Jesus Christ. Christ came to save the lost. He came that man could be connected again to God both now and in eternity. The Bible says that the Gospel of Christ is “Good News.” If we really believe this, then we need to be telling people.

Armed with chocolate chip cookies, GORMMP (good old raisins, M&Ms and peanuts), and plenty of coffee to keep us going, GemStone Media took time in early March to plan anticipated projects and dream about new project ideas for the next fiscal year. This year we had seven team members on site, and two who skyped in from the U.S. for part of the meeting time. We renewed our desire to see the Holy Spirit lead us in our endeavors as we continue to seek Him in prayer. We are excited to see how God will use us in 2011-2012!

Broken and Beautiful

Earlier this fall, two of our video guys were privileged to be able to attend and shoot a baptism service of more than 30 people in southern Germany. It's easy to see the joy of Christ in the faces of those being baptized, and it is encouraging to witness their lives being transformed by the life-changing love of Jesus. This is what we are hoping and praying that God would do all over Europe... again and again!

Open House at the EMC

GemStone Media, along with the GEM field staff who work in the Europe Ministry Center (EMC), held an open house the last week of November to thank God for the office complex (formerly a barn), and to thank our neighbors, the local community, and the contractors for their support and welcome. Each ministry in the EMC was responsible for providing a table or display in their office area, and throughout the day, a short program explaining the Thanksgiving holiday was given in the EMC conference room. About 175 people showed up to celebrate with us, including a town official, the building architect, and two area pastors. What a wonderful opportunity to honor God in His provision and blessing for the ministry of GEM!

Great Hope

Although the statistics can seem daunting, God’s Spirit is moving and He is working in remarkable ways in Europe. God is opening people’s eyes to who He truly is and He is bringing people into a life-changing relationship with Jesus. Why Europe?

For centuries Europe was considered a Christian continent, even the “cradle of Christianity,” as God used men like John Wesley, Martin Luther, John Calvin and others to make a big impact for Jesus on the continent. Today, Europe is a much different place spiritually. It’s amazing to realize that many countries in Europe are less than 3% Christian. In some European countries, less than 1/2 of 1% of the people are true believers in Jesus! GemStone Media has recently finished a short video entitled “Why Europe?” which explains the spiritual state of Europe today and why it is important to reach Europeans with the gospel.

Quale Via? Quale Verità? Quale Vita?

Just off the press, Quale via? Quale verità? Quale vita? (Which Way? Which Truth? Which Life?) is an Italian Bible study that explores what the Bible has to say about basic foundational topics such as Jesus Christ, God, the Holy Spirit, sin, faith, grace, prayer, etc. This 64-page booklet was written by a field worker in Italy because of the difficulty he had in finding something like this already written for an Italian audience. It was really fun (and challenging) for us to help make this project a reality!

One of GemStone Media's video producers, Ted, is currently in the U.S. along with his wife and three children raising financial support so that they can return to Europe and continue working with our GSM team. Ted is a key part of our team, and we are praying that God will provide for them, and allow them to return to us soon!

Partnering with a local art ministry

A trip to India

This summer one of GemStone Media's videographers had the opportunity to go to an area in east India where, a few years ago, over 500 Christians were brutally murdered for their faith in Jesus by Hindu extremists. Through a relationship with a local European church, we were asked to collect stories of the persecution through the eyes of the children who have been left behind, as well as stories of how God has been working among the believers there. Thirty-five children affected by the persecution are living in a safer area of east India in an orphanage called Love and Hope Children's Home.

Love and Hope was created two years ago, and because of lack of finances, it has struggled to provide basic necessities for the kids. GemStone Media is in the process of helping this European church make a video to communicate the need for financial and prayer support for Love and Hope, as well as developing profile pages for individual child sponsorship there.

GEM Annual Conference 2010 Program

GEM's eDOT ministry is working with the Zaporozhye Bible College and Seminary in Ukraine by providing biblical education and theology through their distance learning program for Ukrainian pastors and ministers who don't have the ability or resources to participate in the Bible school's normal program. We were asked to spruce up an existing brochure that promotes the ZBCS distance learning program, all in the Russian language – a first for us!

Video training in Belarus

In early May, GemStone Media was invited to Belarus to train nine Christians from a local church in the art of "digital story telling."

Video producers, Jim and Ted, led the weekend seminar in Brest, Belarus.

After a day of practical instruction, the group was asked to create a short video with the theme "hope." The challenge was given to shoot the video and edit it completely in less than 30 hours... which they did! A short video, "Hope: I am not alone" is the finished product. Over time, the Belarusian fellowship plans to create more short videos that will draw people to consider Jesus and the hope that He gives.

It was a privilege to share our video knowledge and skills with these new friends!

Meet Cassia!

Cassia graduated from high school in June 2009, and has been interning with GemStone Media's video department since October. She has helped us with several video projects and has recently been spearheading a promotional video for a local art ministry. Meet Krister!

Krister is a professional video producer from Spokane, Washington, who has helped GemStone Media's video team on several occasions with various projects over the last couple of years. Recently, he flew over to join us in shooting four How2Video segments. We were particularly thankful to have his expertise available for the technical aspects of lighting and audio!

Krister's hope and prayer is to eventually move to Germany and join our team full-time. We are excited about this possibility and look forward to seeing how God will accomplish it!

GSM shoots 4 videos in under 3 weeks!

It has been a crazy few weeks filming four different How2Videos which follow the first three that have already been finished. Our whole team worked together to film inside and outside in a variety of locations in Basel, Lörrach, and around the Kandern area. The most challenging part was shooting outside with various lighting situations (depending on weather) and unexpected noise problems – like construction, vehicles, or people walking by.

Our graphic design team has created a line of support raising tools for GEM's missionaries to use to communicate well with their financial and prayer supporters.

There are five different designs, and for each design a missionary can choose any (or all) of the following materials:
